Toni has been an active Tarrant County Master Gardener since 2005, a Texas Certified Landscape Professional since 2013, and is Owner/Garden Designer for Signature Gardens. She is also an active member of the Grapevine Garden Club since 2002.

Toni’s garden has been featured on the Colleyville Promenade Garden Tour, the Southlake Spin into Spring Garden Tour, and other Grapevine Garden Club and Master Gardener Tours. Toni has also written several articles for the Grapevine Garden Club Newsletter and a column for the Tarrant County MGA newsletter called “Toni’s Tips.”

"Gardening as a Therapeutic Resource" presented by Raeline Nobles

Introduction
Gardeners discover early how gardening can be a therapeutic experience for themselves. From stress management to quiet problem solving and meditation, we feel more alive and connected to our world because of our time in the garden. If gardening can be therapeutic for ourselves, can it be also helpful to others who are living with stress, illness, grief or other troubles? Yes! As Master Gardeners we most definitely can touch the lives of family, friends and peers dealing with difficulties through gardening. How to make that helping effort be safe and most effective for those we care about involves some simple but important helping concepts that go beyond the use of trowels and shovels. “Gardening as a Therapeutic Resource” will discuss those concepts while providing ideas on how to incorporate the skill and art of helping with your gardening expertise.


Presenter Bio
Raeline Nobles spent 30 years of her professional career helping displaced and marginalized communities grow stronger towards greater self-reliance and health. Her efforts as a licensed therapist include working with issues of domestic violence, acute mental illness, substance abuse, human trafficking, incarceration, poverty, Alzheimer’s Disease, and terminal illness. She retired in 2013 as CEO of the second largest HIV/AIDS organization in Texas, where she spent 15 years developing strategic and collaborative community-based responses to a disease devasting individuals, families, and entire communities. Gardening has always been a critical stress management tool for her, and she utilized her love of gardening throughout her career whenever possible to help others achieve a deeper sense of self efficacy, acceptance and peace. She continues to volunteer in community building efforts, hospice support and HIV prevention – always looking for new ways to incorporate gardening as one of her favorite tools to help achieve therapeutic successes.

Introduction
Habitat loss and degradation are the major threats to wildlife today. As their populations decline, animals of all kinds need our help to restore their homes and improve the land. You can welcome wildlife back into your neighborhood by creating habitat to support birds, butterflies, bees, frogs, and other creatures. Like us, they need food, clean water, shelter, and safe places to raise their young. With some simple steps and a commitment to conservation, everyone can help wildlife at home.

Presenter Bio
Ben Jones, Executive Director of Texas Conservation Alliance, grew up in southeast Texas spending much of his childhood happily lost in the Big Thicket's pine forests and along the Gulf Coast marshes and beaches. He graduated from Texas A&M University with bachelors and masters degrees in the sciences. Previous work experience includes serving the National Audubon Society in multiple roles including Texas State Director of Education as well as Director of the Trinity River Audubon Center. Ben also served the Dallas Zoo for 15 years in various capacities including Senior Director of Conversation where he was responsible for the strategic direction of Dallas Zoo's work saving wildlife ... locally, across the state, and around the world. In 2020, he joined the Texas Conservation (the National Wildlife Federation state affiliate) in his current position as Executive Director. In this role, he leads TCA's work to protect Texas wildlife and their habitats across the state. Interested in science, education, and conservation, especially as they intersect, Ben is passionate about nature as a context for life-long learning, stronger communities, and enriched life. An advocate for Lights Out Texas (which helps to provide safe passage migrating birds), Ben was also a 2021 Texan of the Year finalist.

Bloom where you’re planted; sometimes this is easier said than done! Here in North Texas, we may be blessed with abundant rains one year and hardly any the next. With lots of folks moving this way, water conservation is now just a part of life. Yet we can create beautiful gardens that thrive with little water and give back to us in the very best ways.

Betsy Marsh, Conservation Education Coordinator for the Tarrant Regional Water District and a Tarrant County Master Gardener, shares her adventures gardening with Texas native plants, explain how they make a difference, and help you discover new ways to bloom in North Texas.

Growing up camping in Texas state parks, native plants stole Betsy's heart at a young age, and she has been gardening with Texas natives for more than a decade. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan where she received an MS in Natural Resource Policy and Behavior. As a program coordinator and consultant for various non-profit organizations, she worked with many indigenous, environmental, and human rights advocates from the U.S. and Latin America before settling with her family in Grapevine. Most recently, she worked for the City of Grapevine Parks and Recreation Department developing environmental education programs, helping schools create native plant gardens, managing habitat restoration efforts, and promoting biodiversity research.

Lawn turf care is one of the most-asked questions that comes to North Texas Master Gardener Help Desks. Dr. Hennen Cummings has the answers!

An Associate Professor at Tarleton State University, Dr. Cummings has evaluated experimental herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, plant growth regulators, turfgrass paints and pigments, gypsum formulations, soil wetting agents, biostimulants, microbials, traffic injury abatement systems, new turfgrass and other plant varieties, and fertilizers using visual estimates of quality, injury, density, control. He has access to regional golf courses with nesting blue herons, deer, wild hogs, armadillo, and numerous passerine species for studies of urban wildlife.

The Tarleton State University Turfgrass Field Laboratory has 12 species of irrigated cool and warm-season turfgrasses maintained at various mowing heights and levels. Dr. Cummings also has experience in environmental site assessment and environmental impact mitigation. His doctoral work examined pesticide movement in row crop and turfgrass systems.

Previously, Randy worked as Horticulture Manager for the Dallas Zoo and Director of Horticulture for Texas Discovery Gardens, and he also served as President and Vice President of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT).
