Demonstration GardenOn September 14, a group of Denton County Master Gardeners met at Texas Woman’s University to discuss a new venture for the DCMGA, a permanent, barrier-free demonstration garden on the TWU campus. The garden will showcase EarthKind roses (Phases 1 and 2) and will include Texas native and adapted perennials, annuals, trial plants and herbs. Phase 2 EarthKind roses will be evaluated. The Demonstration Garden has been accepted into a Community Outreach Service Program offered by the Landscape Architecture Department at Texas A&M. Senior students will interview Master Gardeners and TWU staff and then prepare plans for our approval in Spring of 2005. Students will get needed practice in working for a client, and DCMGA and TWU will get a design that is sure to please. TWU has agreed to make the garden space available on the campus, to help with initial bed preparation, to provide minimal ongoing maintenance, to absorb the expense of watering, and to appoint a university representative to coordinate activities and schedules. Denton County Master Gardeners will design and plant the garden; prepare the beds for installation of plants; purchase or arrange for donation of plants, soil amendments, mulch and an irrigation system; provide signs and labels and commit to a maintenance and research schedule. The service and education opportunities here are limited only by our imaginations. Best of all, to those of us who mourn the loss of the Cumberland Rose Trials, service hours that include stopping and smelling the roses are on the way. the dirt 2005 Conference UpdateAs you read this, the minutes are dwindling for your opportunity to buy a raffle ticket for a two-night stay at the luxurious Doral Tesoro Hotel and Golf Club. The drawing for the winner will be held at the December 4 state board meeting in College Station. Call Peggy Durrett now to purchase a raffle ticket for a complimentary two-night stay in 2005 at the Doral Tesoro. Tickets are $5 for one or $10 for three. You may use the prize for the conference, but if I win, I*ll pay the conference fee of $85 per night (these rooms go for $299 per night) and book two nights free for a Metroplex getaway some other time during 2005. The raffle, of course, is a fundraiser for the conference, so you*re supporting the association and conference at the same time. As part of the Doral contract to get the meeting rooms free, we have guaranteed we*ll have guests staying overnight in the hotel. Consider staying in the luxurious hotel and save yourself the drive home Friday evening and the return trip early Saturday morning. After the conference Saturday, enjoy the hotel restaurant, huge swimming pool and health club and extend the luxurious weekend by staying Saturday night. Share the room with friends and bring the price down even more. Make your reservation now! Remember, if you (or your spouse) are a golfer, you play free as a Doral guest (maybe Friday or Sunday; on Saturday, there is a guest golf scramble). The tours have been firmed up, and you will love what Karen Archambault
