Upper Trinity
Regional Water District
In 2000, the Upper Trinity Regional Water District (UTRWD) asked the
Denton County Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists to assist them in
improving the Water Conservation Demonstration Garden and ponds at the water
treatment facility. UTRWD envisioned a garden which would demonstrate water
conservation in a home landscape.
Using mostly xeriscape and native plant materials, the Master Gardener project
team initially redesigned and replanted the existing garden. As new
construction at the water treatment facility was completed, the project team
designed and planted additional beds to demonstrate plants that grow well in the
area and are frequently planted by Denton County residents. The Master
Naturalist project team consulted with UTRWD about the pond's reconstruction and
researched, chose and planted the aquatic plants on the bank to prevent eroding.
Master Gardeners and Naturalists continue to assist UTRWD as consultants and
docents for the gardens and ponds.
The project team was recognized and awarded certificates of appreciation for
public service to the citizens of Denton County in 2001. The gardens are located
900 N. Kealy Avenue in Lewisville and may be visited with permission from UTRWD.
