Become a MG

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2010 class.  We have selected trainees from the applications previously submitted.

If you love gardening and learning about gardening and would like to share your knowledge with others, the Denton County Master Gardener Association offers the opportunity to learn and to serve the community.

To become a certified Master Gardener, you must fill out an application form, attend  training classes, pass the final exam and volunteer time to your community.  Once you are certified you will need to attend advanced training classes and volunteer time on Master Gardener projects.

Training Classes
You must attend seventy hours of core classroom instruction taught by Texas A&M educators and specialists. Class topics include Botany/Plant Physiology, Soils, Lawn Care, Vegetable and Herb Gardening, Insects and Landscape Horticulture.  Experienced, active Master Gardener mentors are paired with trainees to help guide them through a successful classroom training and volunteer experience.

Classes are held each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Texas AgriLife Extension Office, 306 N. Loop 288, Suite 222, Denton, TX  76209.  See below for the 2009 schedule that will list subjects to be covered.  The 2010 schedule will be posted as soon as it is confirmed. There is a fee for training ($140 in 2009); the fee includes the training manual.  The fee is payable on the first class day.

Upon completion of the classroom training and passing the final exam, you will become a Master Gardener Intern. The internship consists of fulfilling seventy volunteer hours of service in the community. Click here to find out more about the Denton County Master Gardener projects.

Certified Texas Master Gardeners are those who have completed their classroom training and internship. A certificate of completion is presented to each intern at the Denton County Master Gardener annual award dinner.

Certified Master Gardeners
Each year, Denton County Master Gardeners must earn a minimum of twelve hours of advanced training and volunteer a minimum of twelve hours on any Master Gardener project to maintain active Certified Master Gardener status.
